Slow, beautiful misery
16 November 2022
The first thing I noticed is how good this show looks. The scenery in this series is absolutely breathtaking. I rarely notice much of a difference with 4k vs 1080 on my television, but this is the rare exception. The colors and details and lighting are gorgeous and would make great backgrounds to showcase a television's quality.

As far as the actual show, it is very laconic and slow. I would find myself becoming lulled by the slow speech paired with the landscapes and have to rewind. The series is well-acted, but it drags. I think it would have been better as a long movie. As with many other westerns, there is a motley assortment of characters, but at some point, the characters devolve into caricatures.

As the story progresses, it becomes increasingly anguished and tortuous. The scenery stays beautiful, but the people become uglier and more disfigured inside and out. For me, it just got to be too relentless in its misery.
