Review of The Larkins

The Larkins (2021–2022)
5/10
A bit weird...
14 November 2022
I was expecting they'd try to continue the story, but they had better ideas.

So for sure, modern camerawork - gorgeous colour - instantly appealing... The weirdness starts with a certain percent (Mariette, for example) of the cast doing their best to impersonate the original characters - though failing because Catherine Zeta impressed me more with her amazing charisma than her actual acting skills at that time... until we see a Pop asking a completely incompetent boy to drive a truck. We know that Pop has no regard for rules, but he wasn't this reckless...

Assuming this is set in the era which predates the 80's, then we must assume that the creators seek to rewrite history in a strangely distorted manner (this is a time bubble set in 2022, right? Not actually historical).

The idea of a Black Estate agent knocking a door and being accepted as a normal person is, in itself, weird... I also remember in about 1972 when going to meet my local GP for the first time, and he was an Asian, my father took me straight home and found a new GP. Just wait until you meet the Tax Man. Obviously, all these 'foreigners' are extremely well spoken English people! I'm impressed that they had access to proper education, they obviously didn't get that in England - so what gives?

They had to be much better if they had any hope of being treated even as human, let alone doctors!!!

Yes, we were hopelessly coloured by our racist attitudes in the '70s. I'm sure I had nothing against 'them', I even had one or two of them as friends... but it was a process of years passing that helped me become more aware of it - later learning that, especially at that time, Asian doctors were generally much better than the pasty caucasian ones... I studied an advanced Electronics course with 6 Indians - and they were incredible people... though they did point out that they would never lower their standards to come and live in England, even they looked down on Asians who moved here.

I'm waiting for someone to walk into the force field which separates this bubble universe from the reality - which would be 2022 outside - as I'm assuming one of these imposters is a Marvel character and that this is a complete illusion.

What it isn't is a look back to an era where (in Darling Buds) racism was actually acknowledged.

Now, the weirdest thing is that none of these men are wearing dresses, and there appears to be a distinct lack of physical dysphoria which, in the modern world, is apparently affecting at least 30% of the population.
