Awaydays is a dull, lifeless drama about football hooliganism in 1970s Britain. The main issue is that the film feels very cheap, even amateur at times, failing to capture the period setting or tell a captivating story.
In terms of acting, it's a mixed bag. The film's lead Nicky Bell, who plays Carty, is a bit weak, failing to bring much charisma to the screen. Liam Boyle's Elvis is a more interesting character, and his homoerotic relationship with Carty has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, I never invested in it in the way the filmmakers intended. And seeing how this relationship is the core of the film, that is a major problem. Stephen Graham is electric as usual, stealing the show in every scene as the unhinged leader of this pack of young hooligans.
