I saw the 175 min film
26 October 2022
Perhaps it is wise for the future viewer(s) to read something about the situation at that time about Yugoslavia.

Maybe on Wikipedia?

Fortunately I had some information through a friend whose parents were originally from this country but on the previous sites I also read about things that were totally unknown to me. (A person is never old enough to learn something) ;)

The film, I have already read comments from others and some were also quite aware of the time this film takes place. Sometimes you use the uniforms to clarify who you are dealing with and luckily I had the performance with the original languages, by the way it lasted 165 minutes in total.

As I read earlier, there are movies in circulation with a 175, 142, 134, 113, and a 102 minute version. Then you come to 6 performances in terms of time. By the way, mine ended without a list of facts, actors and the director. So maybe that was the 175 minute performance.

The playing field of the film is huge, you see long columns with civilians, soldiers and their vehicles and a lot of battle lines where (in my opinion) no money was paid at all and I understand that it is the most expensive (propaganda) film from the former Eastern Bloc has been! The actors do their job well, especially that General Lohring of the Germans (Curt Jurgens) seems funny to me. He pretends to be gods, the army of the Germans. Speaks to his cornered officer with: "We are friends, kill them (the Partisans) and you are a hero, do something for me and I will never forget you". The poor officer has only one strategic choice and that is to dig in and see what the Partisans will do.

The general would rather see him fight to the death! The question is, is he a friend of the general but does he?

The environment where the film takes place is also beautifully portrayed in the film and you can clearly see how they approach each other during the various battles.

Time and effort has been spared and the film captivates (us) from start to finish and that for almost 3 hours!

A great war epic with a message at the end: "Peace, that's what makes me happy"!

8+!
