A truly fascinating ending to a Pretty Good drama
26 October 2022
The Patient was a Pretty Good show. Very firmly in that quality zone. Better than a lot of garbo streaming shows, but far from making the cut on anyone's shows of the decade list. This meant tahg often took itself more seriously than it could pull off- occasionally too an unintentionally comedic extent. Most prominent is the recurrent Holocaust imagery. Like, they were doing something with it, and the thing they were attempting was interesting, but really? Like he's in a literal concentration camp? Like I get that it's about mortality and finding comfort in faith and whatever, but it always just felt a little weird.

However one area they certainly weren't lacking in was committing. They had a very specific show they wanted to make, and they went for it. And of course, this is exemplified by the ending. They did something truly unique and interesting with it. I'm not really convinced they totally pulled it off, but it at least earns a genuine emotional impact.

I'm not sure many people will come back to watch this show years from now, but I think it will persist in discussion about televisions for a good while if only for the ending alone.
