Colin Farrell, Schumacher & Cast Make For Gritty Thought-Piece On Vietnam Blowback
3 October 2022
This is Often Reflected Upon with the Fog of Hindsight as a "Basic Training" Movie with Recruits Preparing to Go to Vietnam.

It's No Such Thing. Although there are Certainly Similarities that Stick in Memory, It is an Infantry "Advanced Training Setting" Movie with Emphasis on the "Hand to Hand" Breakdown of Personality and Philosophical Conflicts.

And 1 Man's Courageous Clash with the Thoughts and Operating Procedures of the Military, its Methods and Conduct.

In Colin Farrell's 1st Major Role, He Explodes and Literally Carries the Story On His Shoulders,.

With the Help of Director Schumacher's Frontal Assault on Filmmaking Using Minimalist Treatment of the Cast Causing Uncomfortable Living Spaces During Filming and Rough Environmental Conditions.

Farrell's Role is an Unorthodox, to Say the Least, Infantry Man that is the Soul of His Platoon of Infantrymen and His "Saviour" of Soldiers who are Illequipped, to Challenge the Army on Abuse, even When They are Clearly Treated "Above and Beyond" the Bounds Usually Adhered Too by the Military.

He Steps-Up and Advocates, to the Chagrin of the Brass, and Rights Some Wrongs with Clever Manipulations.

The Title "Tigerland" Refers to the Final Week of Training in a "Makeshift" Battlefield Made as Realistic as Possible to the Vietnam Experience, for 1 Last (simulated) Exercise Before Deployment.

In the Overall, it Doesn't Amount to Much, but Getting-There is a Thought-Provoking, Physical as well as Mental Clash of Human-Beings Under Stress.

Worth a Watch.
