Menashe is a bit of a schlub.

Warning: Spoilers
If you enjoy looking through the lens to learn about another person's culture, this movie will not disappoint. I kind of felt bad for the hapless Menashe as he stubbles through life in this society with requires strict adherence to ancient laws and teachings. The mystique of the Hassidic sector of Judaism is fascinating in itself, but the plot is predictable and detracts from it. Menashe is ill-equipped to be a responsible parent. One would expect that his son might seriously injure himself under his father's supervision. You pretty much knew what the chick's fate would be when a clueless Menashe feeds it only crackers and then gives it the "kiss of death" bath, The correlation between the chick and the son's issues while under his father's care is obvious and unnecessary.. The movie drives home the point that love alone is not enough to be a good parent.
