Pokémon Gold Version (1999 Video Game)
9/10
A very good sequel

Warning: Spoilers
I still remember how hyped I was for this game back then! Some of the new Pokemon (Like Togepi and Marill) already had been introduced in the show, while others (Like Donphan and Snubbul) were showed in the movie, but I really wanted to know all the new 100 Pokemon included on this game.

My favorite of the new three starters was Totodile (I always preferred the water starters due their effectiveness in battle) The graphics of the game were vastly improved, and the gameplay was still pretty fun.

In many ways, Gold and Silver were as addictive as the classic Red and Blue games; though I had some minor complaints:

*Some of the most interesting second-generation Pokemon (Like Houndour, Larvitar and Misdreavus) were only possible to capture after beating the league, by a point where they were in clear disadvantage due their low fighting level. They were also extremely rare to find. (I was never able to find any Larvitar in the wild)

* The soundtrack is not as iconic as in the Red and Blue games, sounding way too unmotivated and somber (I have no idea if this was intentional, but at moments the soundtrack sounded way too gloomy for my taste, even the happy melodies sounded as if they had some sort of creepy "interference")

*While fighting the protagonist of the previous game was a nice element, I think the aftermath of the battle is way too abrupt; he says nothing and the game ends. Maybe is just me, but I thought something was missing. (Yes, I know the protagonist of the previous game never spoke, but I kinda wish at least something happened)

+Some of the new Pokemon, like Unown, are just mere gimmicks, being rather useless in battle in any way. (Kinda disappointing, considering all the mystery surrounding them; and if you have seen the third movie, you will probably be very disappointed of how very little these Pokemon can do in the actual games)

Despite this, I still have plenty of fond memories of this game, and I can see why many consider it the best Pokemon incarnation. For me, Red and Blue will always be the definitive Pokemon games, but this game is pretty good too.
