After hearing so much about how "scary" this one was since the it came out I was surprised that I found it more...funny. Tongue in cheek humor runs rampant, especially with the police and the townfolk. The gore is pretty extreme to be sure, but there is so much levity to offset it it was hard to get immersed in either tone. The main characters are profoundly dumb, even by horror movie standards, and a lot of moments and characters serve no purpose, but it gets salvaged by a sense of self awareness.
