Review of Starstruck

Starstruck (2005 Video)
7/10
Likable kid actors playing kid actors
8 June 2022
The writer-director, Sheree Le Mon, seems to like her young characters, child and teenage actors on the set of a period film. These kids are varied and convincing as working actors-- they seem self-centered-- yet they are not caricatured. It's fun to watch them hang out and see how they relate to each other. Much of the movie doesn't make sense-- based on the reactions of their fans, the teenagers appear to be stars, but the production of the movie they are making seems pretty low budget-- maybe because Starstruck itself was lower budget. More serious dramatically, the central character, the teenage actress Elizabeth, has an existential crisis which includes feeling like she has no friends-- yet she seems like she's friends with her peers. She also looks a little past her teen years. But I liked these characters and stayed with the movie all the way through. Sheree Le Mon has a good sense of composition and movement. If you come across the DVD somewhere, it's well worth a rescue.
