SPINE CHILLING
4 June 2022
Watched #TirandajShabor, the fourth installment of the detective Shabor series, adapted from the novel Tirandaj by the eminent novelist #ShirshenduMukhopadhyay, directed by #ArindamSil & co-written by #PadmanabhaDasgupta, produced by #RupaDutta under the banner of #CamelliaProductions and distributed by #SVF.

Direction is definitely smarter than the previous franchises. Shabor is much humane here. But using Rashomon effect in these movies seem cliché now-a-days. Narrative is good too, structure-wise.

Cinematography by #AyanSil is of high order. I must mention in one indoor sequence of Papia's drawing room where ACP Shabor & Nando were interrogating Papia and her lover, where they were tensed at loggerheads. The shot showed 20% of the two subjects' heads only and 80% headspace of Wallprinted Waves. The shot was so 'beautifully disturbing and distorted' yet so meticulous, that resembles any shot from any typical Korean or Iraninan flicks. Kudos to the DOP to have used such a brilliant frame in Tollywood, which broke the stereotypes of usual shot-taking techniques.

Editing by #SanglapBhowmik is crisp too. The film is fast-paced with a run time of less than 2 hour ( 1 hr 53 mins only ).

Music by the maestro #BickramGhosh is the most gripping one, which made the whole film and each scene too intriguing and edge-of-the-seat, giving ample chills and cold blood running down ur spine.

Apu-da, aka #SaswataChatterjee as ACP Shabor Dasgupta as usual excels with his superb dialogue deliveries and body-language ably supported by the comic timings and nuances of #SubhrajitDutta as Nando, Vicky-da aka #NigelAkkara as Sumit Ghoshal/Bulu deserves special mention with his rugged yet charming persona to deliver such a layered character so poignantly. #ArindamSil as Sitanath Samaddar looked vicious through his superb acting. Veteran #ChandanSen as Pareshnath showed his mettle in his scenes. But, must say, there was no clarification of the fact that why his character is shown effeminate irrelevantly. Its not justified through the script. As far as I know, the main novel didnt have any effeminate character. Even if the actor has chosen to layer this character like this, proactively, I must say that unnecessarily its derogatory to titillate audience to provoke laughter by using effeminacy as a card. That portion is quite disappointing.

#PoulomiDas as Sonali Basu in her cameo looked ravishing.

#SaranyaKar as Jamuna is good, but need to work on her accent a bit before playing such a underprivileged character of a slum.

#ParometaMukherjee in her small role showed her prowess by the way she crafted her body language and lines in front of the stalwart, with such ease.

Majo-di aka #DebjaniChatterjee as Papia Samaddar deserves special mention. Each frame where she was in, she just killed it with her persona. Such a strong actress she is !

But unfortunately, to be honest, #DevlinaKumar as Pritha/Rumki didnt impress me me at all. I know she is not a contemporary actress, but a dancer and teacher, but in this character, much layers and voice modulation and intonation is expected, which seems missing in her part, I'm afraid to be such blunt. However she looked gorgeous.

Definitely its recommended to watch this film once for the Cinematography and Background Score as its two pillars. 👍🏻
