Ben Harper (Joseph Cotten) is being chased by two men and he rides into a town wanting a new shoe for his horse.
He is met by Sheriff Adam Prescott (Claude Akins) who thinks he has met Harper before. Prescott had a leg amputated during the civil war and believes that Harper was the butcher who hacked it off.
Prescott is a fair man who cleaned up his little town as the sheriff. However Harper notices that the others live in fear of him. Prescott has been bitter since he lost his leg.
There are good performances from both Cotten and Akins. Both men dance around in a cat and mouse game. Prescott is convinced that Harper is a medical man.
The catalyst is when Prescott's son is injured and needs his leg fixing.
I still thought Harper might have been better to show Prescott his bullet wound and that he was in the hospital bed next to him.
