Helluva Boss (2019– )

Tonal Dissonance
12 May 2022
I used to follow vivziepop back in the day during the zoophobia era, she was one of the first internet creators that inspired me to become an artist, so please don't think this review is coming out of pure spite.

Very talented folks worked on this show, just wish it wasn't held back by its writing and tone.

Heck, if the world was different and vivziepop hadn't been Like That I'd totally enjoy it, it's not something I'd become and active fan of, but I'd enjoy it!

It's got a great production value, like, it looks great, and the humour is genuinely good at times. But surprisingly it's NOT the dumb edgy jokes that stick with me.

Those edgy jokes in question are less subversive and groundbreaking and instead just give the series a weird tonal dissonance.

However, it has less of those than hazbin hotel, which I can at least appreciate.

The writing itself is very solid! The relationships between the main characters are decently well established and expanded upon very well. So it's extra weird that they fall back upon these jokes that boil down to 'X male character calls a woman a b**** and that's the joke'.

I'm sure some folks would chock that up to 'establishing that the characters are demons and it's normal for them to be mean' and that's chill! I get that. But when kids are kinning Blitzo Helluva Boss on tumblr dot com, my eyebrow is naturally raised.

The fact that it's tone is so 'children's show', but it's subject matter is so adult, it just naturally draws in edgy teens... despite it being advertised as a show for mature audiences... Teens aren't a mature audience lmaoo, and maybe it would be worth examining Why your show attracts the wrong audience and altering its tone, instead of just slapping the mature audiences label on it and sending it out into the world for whomstever.

I know some folks have the opinion that artists don't need to change/obscure their mature content for kids on the internet. But Helluva Boss is a whole damn show!! Not some rando's explicit FNAF fanfic.

And I don't think, despite what her political opinions might be now, that vivziepop and her team are thoughtful enough to curate a message that won't be at least a little damaging for those teens.

I just wish Vivienne would take some responsibility and acknowledge that her audience IS mostly teens.

I was exposed to some crazy stuff as a kid, and it didn't Destroy me mentally, but i'm still at least able to realise that doing the same stuff those people did to me for a new generation is kinda messed up! At least a bit.

Overall, this show feels like it's a kids show trapped in an adult swim show's body, and that viewing experience is an awkward one.

If you like this show you're not evil. If you work on this show you're not evil. If you're Vivienne Medrano you're not evil. I'm glad you were able to find a nice community and make friends through it!

Please just examine what you're saying and putting out into the internet before doing so. Just be nice to each other.
