The story of gordon comstock, played by richard grant. As a wanna-be poet, he had a "respectable" paying job, which he quit to be a full time poet. Comstock quickly learns that he will need a job to survive, and to treat the girlfriend (helena carter) to nice things. Comstock has so much to learn, as he works in a bookstore and does his best to woo the girlfriend. It's okay. Pretty slow going. Apparently, this was also going to be called keep the aspidistra flying... glad they didn't go with that one. A story by george orwell. Who knew ?? Partially based on his own life. Directed by robert bierman. And just fyi.... apartments which showed aspidistra in front were deemed to be respectable landlords. It's pretty good... a bit dry and dated now.
