Jane Emelin (Juliette Lewis) moves into an apartment building by herself, much to the chagrin of her TV weatherman boyfriend, Greg Harrison (William Hurt).
Upon moving in, odd events start almost immediately. Jane is besieged by a plague of flies, maggots, and mice. This coincides with her meeting her new neighbors, including the apartment manager (Shelley Duvall), a creepy locksmith (Tobin Bell), and the seemingly nice Mr. Collins (Austin Pendleton).
