I grew up watching the 90's version of Little Women and I love the book, so I have fond memories of this story. I was really excited about this new adaptation, but there were so many issues. First, the actor that plays Amy is WAY too old to be playing a 12 year old. It felt so weird. She's a grown woman playing a 12 year old. Weird. It completely detracted from her whole story line to watch a woman in her 20's have a temper tantrum.
I also did not like how they portrayed Beth. In the book, she is just a shy, slightly awkward girl. In this adaptation, she almost seems like she's on the spectrum. I'm a speech therapist and am all for supporting neurodiversity and showing the world who autistic people truly are. This was just such a weird adjustment to Beth's character and I don't understand the purpose.
My other big issue is how choppy the story felt. If I had never seen another adaptation or read the book, I would have missed some big points and been a little lost. The overall storytelling was choppy and did not flow well.
Honestly, skip this adaptation and watch the 90's version. There is really no comparison.
