A battle that nearly destroyed the early Roman Empire.

Warning: Spoilers
It seems possible that "I Claudius" mentions the battles that are dealt with here in Germany, with Emperor Augustus receiving a visit from a Roman officer who imitates use the only surviving member troops sent there to give the Germans in check. The officer describes the torments that the Roman soldiers endured before they died, but that is not shown here. What is shown indicates how a German chieftain, Arminius, set the Romans up in a trap, and the efforts of Roman consul (Cameron Mitchell) to protect his troops from what he considers barbaric forces.

There's action, romance, plenty of drama and an impressive view of ancient Roman history, realistically portrayed or at least seemingly so. It's a lavish late entry into the sword and sandal peplum genre, interestingly coming two years after the same producers of these peplum ethics began switching their attention to Spaghetti Westerns. It's entertaining, a bit slow in spots, but interesting on a historical basis. It's ironic that the Roman forts look very much like 4 it's utilized in old westerns. What the luck, especially if you've seen "I Claudius" and other epics about the Roman Empire and are familiar what the historical significance of the plotliine.
