The actual title of the original book is _Cuore_, which is Italian for "heart." ("Corazon" is Spanish.) Edmondo De Amicis (1846-1908) wrote the book as if a diary of a young boy's school year in Torino (Turin), a city in the northern part of newly unified Italy. It was published on October 17, 1886, which was literally the first day of school for that year.
