As he revisits these memories, the audience learns them as he does. The film weaves in and out of drama, romance, thriller, and horror, seamlessly.
It's an all-around stunning film, from the writing, art direction, acting, editing, to color grading. You get the sense of being grounded in reality and yet being in a dream-like state. You can almost feel the atmosphere of isolation and desperation. It's an absolute must-watch.
