"ReLIFE" - Second Chances

Warning: Spoilers
Arata Kaizaki is a 27-year-old NEET ("Not in Education, Employment, or Training") who has just quit his job after only being there for three months. Faced with little prospects and looking like a societal wash-out, he is about to give up when one evening he is approached by a mysterious young man named Ryo Yoake, who represents a company called ReLIFE Laboratories and offers him a job opportunity. The catch is, that first he needs to participate in an experiment where he will physically appear to be 10 years younger and be sent back to high school. The intent is to experience youth again and in the process, fix whatever is wrong with the subject's life.

"ReLIFE" is the anime' adaptation of one Japanese Manga series created by So Yahoi. I had first encountered "ReLIFE" on a blind buy, and it took me two years to finally get around to watching it. A blend of science fiction, fantasy, romance and teen-comedy, "ReLIFE" is quite humorous - but it does have some serious moments and tense situations that show that the series does have some dramatic depth and maturity.

Basically, Arata gets a second chance to re-do a crucial part of his life. In the process, he not only fixes problems in his own troublesome existence (and score a well-paying job afterward), but his actions have a significant impact on those around him, especially his new classmates, who eventually become his newest friends. Of course, there's the shy, awkward honor student Chizuru Hishiro; Rena Kariu, a highly competitive athlete; Kazuomi "Kazu" Oga, another academically gifted student but who is also a poor athlete; An Onoya, who is a poor student like Arata; and Honoka Tamarai, who is Rena's best friend and captain of the girl's volleyball team.

"ReLIFE" is a bit of wish-fulfillment fantasy. Arata Kaizaki is one of the rare Everyman characters in Anime' that people can truly relate to, and who is given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to correct whatever mistakes in his past as to change the course of his future.

I'm sure we've all been there.

That's why "ReLIFE" is a new favorite for this Anime' viewer.

10/10.
