3/10
Spectacular and very impressive, but also very sad and troubling

The action and special effects in this movie are incredible, (but also quite repetitive). It's impressive that it was written and filmed nearly 30 years after the next chapter. They did a good job at connecting them and setting the stage for the story that follows. A person unfamiliar with the series would have no idea that this is a prequel (except that its special effects are far more advanced).

But what really bothers me about this movie, and the main reason why I can't give it a higher rating is because of what Anakin does. The fact that this once friendly and genius kid turns to evil and begins killing innocent people is very troubling. He even tortures and basically kills his pregnant wife and numerous others. It's wonderful when bad characters turn good. Bud having a good character turn into such an evil person is very disturbing and unpleasant. It's one thing to have robots and wicked people destroyed. But having a bunch of good people including innocent women and children killed by a formerly good character is just not right.

It's not surprising that it's rated PG 13. Surprisingly it really contains no blood or profanity. As a Christian I commend this part. And it doesn't actually promote violence. Nevertheless, what Anakin does, and the way he is portrayed near the end is so troubling that I think it probably should've been rated R. It's not the big battle at the end that's too intense (that part is outstanding), rather it's what he does, especially when he attacks his wife who was pleading with him.

It sets the stage for the next film, but there could've been a better way of doing it.
