What If...? (2021– )

Um... what? (First Episode Review)
12 August 2021
Okay, right off the bat this episode SEEMED like it was going to work with The Watcher's opening narration, but it dissolved into fan-fiction self-indulgence the millisecond Steve Roger's Iron-Man suit came into play; that and the AWFUL dialogue being filled with one-liners that'd be in place for an action-adventure film parody like Last Action Hero and condensing Captain America's plot into a half-hour episode that felt like a network mandate rather than creative choice.

While I do appreciate the concept of this show, the first episode was an unusually rough start. The writing was rushed, character-breaking and had a general lack of creative risk other than being a parallel universe of a story we've already seen play out in a more fleshed-out feature-length manner. Maybe the next episodes will be more developed and cohesive; because this first one was... unimpressive. Also I hope the animation doesn't feel as rubbery and wannabe-SpiderVerse animation (the animation is good at times but it's too fluid and motion-blurred to be comparable to other animations evoking drawings, and it doesn't fit the 2:35.1 aspect ratio at all).

I'm hoping the series develops further on and proves its worth by the time the final episode airs. At the moment, it gets 2/5 stars.
