Who, better than the Italians, can speak about the Italian cancer, the Mafia, who better than them? Who can tell how some pure Italian folks, mostly "pure" women, accept to sacrifice themselves to serve the just cause vs Evil? Who? And don't forget that Italian is a very very religious country, where God is very important and also Saints. So it is so comfortable to illustrate those brave woman as Saints fighting against Evil, the Italian Mafia Cancer. There were batches of those films, mostly semi documentary films, such as for instance LEA, produced at nearly the same period. I think it's mostly destined to Italian audiences.
