So many aspects to like about Vanguard: Being able to continue on another quarter, excellent use of colours, multiple progressive stages, fun sounds (even the calliope music on the diagonal stages), a boss at the end, shooting in four directions, invincibility mode, a sense of capability and accomplishment. Though not frantic, there is a sense of excitement dodging and shooting enemies throughout the screens. Controls are responsive although they take a little getting used to for an arcade.
Two recommended improvements. One is some sort of story, if not visual, even a paragraph at the end after defeating the boss would help. Another is a more 'stick and move' battle at the end instead of landing a well-timed shot.
Overall, tons of fun and games like these are one of the reasons why I enjoy arcade games so much. Most impressive for 1981!
