Garfield (an excellent performance by Mykelti Williamson) insists that Steger (ably played by Sandy Ward) planted the gun on the suspect. Various officers from the Hill are forced to haul corpses to the morgue because of a strike; Hill (a fine Michael Warren) comes across the body of his wayward dad. Bate's ex-boyfriend Tom (a nicely smarmy Eric Pierpoint) complains to Coffey (likeable Ed Marinaro) after Bates (sturdy Betty Thomas) confronts him about ditching her.
The inquest about the shooting by Garfield in the alley proves to be quite grueling and painstaking as both Furillo (the always terrific Daniel J. Travanti) and the investigating officers try to figure out who exactly is telling the truth. It's heartbreaking to see Steger hang himself with his own words and subsequently go down in flames. Poor Belker (essayed with trademark growly gusto by Bruce Weitz) winds up being abducted by the two hoods he's trying to bust and has a close call at a liquor store that said hoods try to rob. Moreover, Hill has a touching conversation with Renko (solid Charles Haid) about his his father in which he admits that he loved the man even though he was never really there for both Hill and his family. Pat Corley makes a welcome and hilarious return appearance as sarcastic coroner Wally Nydorf.
