It's What's Happening, Baby! (1965 TV Special)
9/10
A glorious time capsule of 1965 youth culture
7 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The footage here, reportedly unseen since it was aired in 1965, is remarkable! Some of the acts are standard onstage performances while others are more like music videos: Herman's Hermits hitting on women (and getting rejected by their mothers) as they walk down the street, and The Ronettes in full baseball gear trying to get the attention of a guy eating a hot dog, etc. My favorite is when Martha and the Vandellas sing their way through a Ford Motor factory, ending up in a Mustang as it rolls through the assembly line. Herman Munster makes an unexpected (and illogical) appearance during a Cannibal and the Headhunters beach scene. This seems to be a kinescope recording, but the sound is pretty good and it is great seeing "new" footage of so many classic artists in their prime. It's an exceptional time capsule for dance moves and teen fashion, too!
