The Americans: Divestment (2015)

Strong episode sets up some big intrigue
15 February 2021
The Jennings conclude the South African mission and Martha asks Phillip some relevant questions.

This is another strong episode that subtly depicts a number of characters trapped in difficult situations and those with the power either do or do not help.

The plot centres mostly around Phillip and Elizabeth, but it also focuses on Martha and Nina. I won't mention specifics as not to spoil, but it feels like a lot is being set up in this one, with the scenes between Martha and Phillip being the most intriguing for what comes next.

All cinematography, editing and effects are excellent. One quite shockingly violent scene is so well done it has the same effect on the audience (depending of course how hardened you are) as it does the onlooking characters.

Performances from all are excellent as usual with Alison Wright standing out for me.

I'd rate it 8.5/10 if I could, so I'm rounding up.
