There are no safe bets

I don't think I've ever seen Charlie Chan in so much danger as he is in this film. He gets wounded and then a gunman comes back to finish him off.

There are so many characters in this that the viewer has to really concentrate when doing their own sleuthing. A lot of the characters are openly bent as well in this story of race fixing. That is apparent straight away when a really top class horse called Avalanche is cheated out of a race he could easily have won. The horse's owner is killed aboard ship en route to the next racing venue and it's made to appear as though Avalanche is the killer.

Chan's main problem is to uncover the person who is at the head of the big time gambling ring who is behind all the trouble. Lee Chan is at his father's side as usual. I enjoy the way Charlie always thinks he can do without Lee's help but is proved wrong. That's one deduction he never seems to get right because his son proves to be essential once again in this one.

This is a very enjoyable mystery in which horse racing technicalities are on show to the viewer. The action also involves horse switching and mysterious 'dead horse' warning messages floating through the air in order to intimidate several of the characters.
