Richard Stanley's sophomore effort uses the arid setting of Namibia to great effect, stranding us in a place of desolation marked by dunes and steeped in mysticism. The film follows a mysterious drifter as he roams the land searching for victims; for he is a supernatural killer - a dust devil.
Stanley has a firm grasp on tone and visuals even when the narrative's initial ambiguity threatens to disengage us. The stunning cinematography helps in that regard.
This is an unusual venture into horror with otherworldly qualities, but it manages to keep you invested in what's unfolding while being augmented by an atmospheric score.
7/10
