The French certainly make some very clever and engaging films and this is certainly one of them. You could probably anticipate the ending but not the route to get there. This is a film you can watch again and again.
When you compare this and other European films with the genre that is coming out of the US now you can only be grateful that there are such films available to watch and enjoy.
