Warning: Spoilers
"The Perfect Boyfriend" is a slick cat-and-mouse game featuring the smooth-talking Jacob Tellman, who renews the acquaintance of his high school classmate April Hill. April stands to inherit a family fortune, so Jacob knocks off her mother Claire, who takes an untoward tumble down the stairs. Now, Jacob has his sights set on marrying April, murdering her and claiming the family's assets that will go to the little Munchkin Sammy.

Jacob is assisted by the most interesting character in the film, Karen, who is the secretary of April's ex-husband Chuck Gridge. Karen uses her access to Chuck's computer system to help set him and his ex-mother-in-law up for the fall. Clearly, Jacob and Karen will stop at nothing in their dastardly scheme.

But Jacob had not counted on the fragile psyche of the hard-drinking Karen, who is constantly tippling and seems forever on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Her insecurity is apparent in her wild imagination that leads her to believe that Jacob loves April more than he loves her. At any moment, the carefully conceived plan could implode with one of Karen's meltdowns.

The filmmakers were successful in developing an intricate narrative in which all of the strands were connected. There was a subplot with April's mother preparing an investigative article on the corrupt Marco Rizzo, who had ties to her ex-husband Chuck. Another important secondary character was April's cousin Riley, who caught onto Jacob's lying and sought to warn April.

The action comes to a head in April's magnificent country home, where Jacob plans to murder her. Due to the faithful efforts of Riley and her boyfriend Aiden, help is on the way! The wild card in the film is the loose canon Karen, who shows up on cue for the fireworks. Ultimately, the walls will finally close in on the suave and debonair Jacob Tellman. Checkmate!!!
