Warning: Spoilers
Kate Powell served as godmother to little Ellie, the daughter of her neighbors, Annie and Mike Harding. But when Annie is murdered on the night of Halloween, it appears that Kate may have the opportunity to play major role in caring for Ellie and baby Logan. Because Kate is infertile and as she was the person to discover Annie's body, Kate is a suspect in the murder case.

The filmmakers were successful in toggling between Kate and Annie's husband Mike as the culprit. But the angelic nature of Kate allows the viewer to recognize that she would never harm the mother of those two beautiful children.

An especially intriguing character was Tim Powell, the attorney husband of Kate, who is often insensitive to his wife. Tim uses his lawyerly logic to urge his wife not to get too attached to the kids because legally they must remain under the care of Mike and the children's grandparents. But Tim slowly comes around to looking at what would be in the best interest of the kids and viewing the situation from the perspective of his wife.

There is a salient moment in the film when Mike asks Tim if he would like to purchase a sailboat with him. The request oddly comes immediately after the funeral of Annie. Was Mike attempting to move on with his life in thinking about the boat? Or, was his desire to purchase the boat an example of the crass materialism at the heart of Mike at a time when he should have been in bereavement?

The actress playing Kate was especially adept in handling baby Logan with loving care and in showing genuine concern about little Ellie. That devotion was the essence of her character. The love and sensitivity of the Godmother was the heart and soul of this film.
