After World War II there was a deep fear of Communist infiltration. The paranoia became so extreme that many people were accused of being Un-American for exercising their constitutional right against self-incrimination. People such as Ring Lardner Jr., Paul Robeson, and John Henry Faulk were blacklisted and their careers suffered. John Henry Faulk took his accuser to court and won.
