Evil Never Wins: An Epic Space Adventure

Warning: Spoilers
This has got to be the most watched animated film of my early childhood. I remember how obsessed I was with this movie and buzz lightyear in general, i would ask for nothing but buzz lightyear merchandise from my parents, and as soon as I would finish watching the movie I would just rewind it, over and over and OVER! Despite my love for this sweet piece of nostalgia, I know this movie isn't perfect and I will give a fair review.

Ever since watching toy story, as a kid, I always wanted to see a buzz lightyear movie, and this movie gave me exactly what I wished for. The opening sequence alone is the perfect example of what a buzz lightyear solo film should be, Buzz and his partner Warp are tasked to find 3 kidnapped little green men (LGM ), on a dark moon where evil emperor Zurgs base is. This beginning is just breathtaking as buzz and warp battle crater vipers, a crater viper/Mutant, zurgs Hornet robots, and finally a series of explosions that results in Warps death. Zurg soon discovers that the LGMs minds are all connected through the " Unimind" he decides to steal it to use its power to allow him to mind control the entire galaxy. He does this by simply touching it causing it to turn evil and let out a disturbing wail of pain, making you realize that despite zurgs wackiness he is a truly evil guy that might actually succeed in taking over the galaxy. Buzz and his new friends are the only space rangers left that can stop him, but they must learn to work together, you have probably seen this kind of story before, but it is unique for many reasons. Buzz lightyear is the perfect hero that toy story made you think he was, also hes a cooler guy in this, tim allens voice really elevates him. After the loss of his partner, warp, buzz goes through a depression where he refuses to take on a new partner, despite the story providing him with 3 new friends who want to help him. Mera is a cool character, being an alien princess that was inspired by buzz to become a space ranger and she has unique alien powers that make her like a ghost. Second is Booster the star command janitor, who dreams about becoming a space ranger, and last is XR a funny little robot that is made by the LGMS to be buzz's expendable partner, but he ends up gaining sentience and becoming a valued ally. Zurg is just the best supervillain ever, hes a fusion of the emperor and Darth vader from star wars, and despite being menacing hes absolutely hilarious, thanks to wayne knights hamminess and some golden dialogue. " And so ends Star command! Oooh im so Evil, I just gave myself chills! Im a Bad Boy. Hahhaaha" This movie possesses so much self aware humor its incredible to watch, like when the LGMs planet is under attack, Texts pop up on the screen to point this out, and then another set of text pops up that say " obviously". Also Buzz and zurg play their archetypes perfectly, but are self aware enough to point their clichés out. Zurg:" Shoot at the planet of widows and orphans!, Buzz: You Fiend! Zurg: Ha, I knew that would get him" The movie is mostly lighthearted fun, that could have used more development but its just such a fun ride, the movie ends with booster's giggle, that tells you that this movie is just an enjoyable wacky story that is meant to replicate the spirit of Saturday morning cartoon cheese, and its amazing because of that.

When I was a kid I didn't know that this was just a pilot episode for the cartoon tv series of the same name. I never got into the show, but from the few episodes I have seen of it, its delightfully funny as well, but the creators lost Tim allen as the voice actor for buzz and replaced him with Patrick warbuton, he doesn't do a terrible job, but all I can think about is Kronk from emperors new groove, and they made buzz more of a doofus in the tv series. Despite that, this movie is just fantastic, its the perfect action adventure movie for all children to enjoy, its the perfect fusion of comedy and action. It posses a strong theme of heroism that I feel I needed as a kid to truly understand, the part where Buzz tells zurg " Evil never wins" is a a quote I still revere. The sci fi aspects of the movie are just so creative and filled me with so much imagination and wonder as a kid, yes sir, this is still a movie I hold dear to my heart. Now to end this review, and don't act like you weren't expecting this! To Infinity and Beyond!!!!!
