Review of Snatchers

Snatchers (2019)
7/10
Low budget fun

There is a lot to like or not like about this movie.

The movie is directed with the same sensibility of a lot of Youtube clips. That is, actors talking direct to camera, exaggerated representation of characteristics, quick cuts and lots of dumbish jokes. The reason for this style is of course it comes from the Youtube generation, just like there were people who made movies after getting their break directing movie film clips (the MTV directors) and before that, those whose background was TV (such as Speilberg). But also, this would reduce the budget and other issues considerably, because they can easily use these quick cuts to hide lots of issues, especially special effects.

The style ends up not being cool, but manages to maintain the style throughout the whole movie. But it does create an intimate feel where we are focused mostly on the people inthe movie more than anything else. So that works well. What doesn't work well is that it doesn't really build tension or create mood.

The story is nothing special, but it is built on something deeper. Yes, it is about teenage pregnancy, about girls taking responsibility for their own bodies and the consequence of their actions, it shows men being controlled by sexual drives, but also unpacks their actions, and it looks at how each generation is the same but also different.

The special effects are pretty crappy, but they are not on film for very long, and use techniques to make you feel that you are seeing them more. A technique that let Spielberg fool people into thinking that Jurassic Park's 4 minutes of CGI were longer. At the same time, we, the audience, are in on the joke that the practical effects in this movie are not that good.

Ultimately it understands that they don't have much money or great actors, and instead puts together a fun movie that is worth watching when you realise that it is not meant to be high art.
