Remarkably Watchable Because of All That Talent
27 April 2020
Forget the plot and concentrate on the gorgeous Irving Berlin songs. Marilyn Monroe demonstrates her enduring appeal with "After You Get What You Want You Don't Want It" and "Heat Wave," and Ethel Merman belts out the title song, making it her own forever, along with "Play a Simple Melody" and "Let's Have another Cup o' Coffee." With costar Dan Dailey, Merman sings "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody" and "When That Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves for Alabam'." Donald O'Connor, and Mitzi Gaynor also shine. This is classic show biz about show biz. ---from Musicals on the Silver Screen, American Library Association, 2013
