Episode #1.10000
8 February 2020
Coronation Street will be celebrating its diamond anniversary this year. However this is an early celebration. This was episode 10,000.

To celebrate, some scenes had some nods to the past. A callback to kids playing on the cobbled streets. The closing titles has clips from the end credits of yesteryear. Sound clips were used of all the commotion that took place over the years in the Rovers Return.

We now live in an age where the ratings of all the soap operas have declined markedly. No longer does Coronation Street get 16 million viewers and episodes are now cranked out 6 times a week.

Too many episodes, stories dragged out for too long and recycled plots. They are no longer must see soap operas and I guess a good portion of viewers are on their smartphones going through their social media with the show on the background.

Rita receives news that her third husband who ran out on her has died. That was Dennis Tanner, an original character from 1960. He reappeared in 2011 after an absence of 43 years. Here Dennis has died off screen.

Rita has been tasked to dispose of his ashes and former stepdaughter Jenny Bradley hires a party coach to take everyone to Blackpool.

The road to Blackpool proves to be a long and arduous one. It was all rather inconsequential aimed at the casual viewer who might have dropped in. Unfortunately the knockabout fun in the coach came across as rather desperate reflecting how the standard of writing has dropped over the decades.
