Jhalki (2019)

Humanitarian movie: an eye-opener to child labour & trafficking
14 November 2019
Jhalki (Aarti Jha), a 9-year-old little girl, sets out into the unknown for saving her 7-year-old brother Babu (Goraksha Sakpal).

Far away from the commercially booming blockbuster movies and the archetypal mainstream Bollywood, Jhalki provides the breath of fresh air that will let you revisit your childhood and get the Jhalki (glimpse) of innocence, nostalgia, simplicity, and an unwavering inner peace. However, the path of Jhalki is not at all peaceful- hazardous and tumultuous with the menaces of social sharks lurking around to push a gifted soul into child labor and trafficking. The alarming issue of child slavery, the worst vice, is the focal point of the storyline.

Boman Irani, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Divya Dutta, and Sanjay Suri may help in familiarizing the audience with the film crew.

But child artist little Aarti Jha is the soul of the movie. Her efforts deserve huge claps, rounds of applause, encouragement, and love.

Filmed at the backdrop of the rural hinterland of Northern India, Jhalki teaches the onlooker the never-say-die attitude with protagonist Jhalki herself being the flagbearer. The most important part of being the viewer is to connect with her and see things from her perspective. At times, the narrative may be too precarious for little Jhalki to deal with but believe in her to overcome all hurdles.

Come what may, Jhalki will fight all odds with hopes of reuniting with her sweet brother. Will Jhalki happen to see her doting brother again? Watch out yourself.

Sadly, this movie will not get the intended target audience and the reception it deserves, but the film is a winner from the very moment it addresses the unforgivable social issue. The film will give you a tragic reminder that there exist many kids who are robbed of their dreams, childhood, innocence, and future aspirations by exploitative forces, poverty, illiteracy, and a sinister mentality. If this film can evoke compassion and empathy for the little ones and with whatever fewer resources the film harbored on, it will be a victory only.

For such a humanitarian victory Jhalki is awarded 4.5/5 JHALKI ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
