The Women (1939)

Very witty and well scripted film. I was impressed by each characters distinct and colorful personality. Joan Crawford may have been obnoxious at times but I also enjoyed her shrewdness. All along there were lines that foreshadowed Mary Haines regretting her divorce... which maybe true but the "back to your senses" line personally stung. The message that women have to be everything beautiful, rich, sophisticated, elegant, stylish, cunning, competitive, on and on... for the ultimate prize of a husband was definitely a concept I struggled to accept. That being said, I felt it was quite edgy to portray so many different responses to divorce. Although our main character ultimately runs back to her beau, along with some of her friends, others are liberated by becoming free and single women. The fashion show scene was absolutely amazing... the props, the stage, the outfits, and the technicolor!
