Review of SMG4

SMG4 (2011– )

A meme fest galore!
14 September 2019
It's hard to describe SMG4. To put it simply, it's a series involving Mario (being a spaghetti loving moron) and his friends including SMG4 (who looks are like his only wearing blue and white clothing), Luigi, Toad just to name a few going on wacky, fast-paced meme filled adventures.

Of course from that description, the point of this series is to be a comedy, subverting the Mario universe and other Nintendo properties like Zelda or Kirby. It has a wide variety of humour from slapstick, fourth wall breaks, dark and sex filled humour (btw this isn't a family friendly channel, despite many children making up a great deal of the audience) and while most of them can work, providing lots of laugh out loud laughs, others do come across as awkward but not as bad as something like Family Guy. The way the show inserts memes surprisingly doesn't feel forced (at least in early seasons but I'll come to that later) and each character (protagonist or antagonist) have their own unique personalities.

Now onto flaws: Many SMG4 viewers have their own vision of when the show entered Simpsons, Family Guy or Spongebob territory of seasonal rot around season 5 (2016-2017) or above (I personally think it went downhill in 2018). This is because of repeated plot lines from earlier episodes, overuse of jokes and characters who either overstay their welcome or shouldn't even exist, as well as the inclusion of drama-filled story arcs. People like myself note these issues because they feel out of place within the shows environment and universe (A show where nearly everyone has a love-hate relationship with each other suddenly caring for one another in a big story or completely original characters who are not Nintendo based).

Finally, the show is produced in Super Mario 64 and later on Gmod and uses stock music and sound effects to help deliver the jokes. Rather if that can be considered a good or bad thing can depend on who you ask.

To conclude, if you're looking for a good time, this show is worth a look though stick with 2012-2017 period since that's where most of your good time will come from. 7/10
