Sad Farewell to the Screen's Greatest Comedy Team!

Warning: Spoilers
Laurel and Hardy had been out of films for five years when this one came along. The boys were still quite popular in Europe and were touring there at this time. Someone convinced them to make this film in Europe. It has it's moments but overall it is a mess. The story line is hard to follow as is the dubbing of the French actors lines.

Stan inherits a south sea island and boat. The crooked lawyers cheat them out of cash that is coming to them. In the best scenes in the film, the boys find their boat on the docks of Marseilles and begin to load up and prepare to set off for their island. A man with no country and a stowaway join them. Aboard the boat there are some funny moments as Stan and Ollie accuse each other of stealing their food.

The boat is caught up in a storm and wind up getting beached on an atoll that has just risen from the sea. They set up shop and through whatever means build up a small community where there are no taxes or rules to follow. Then a young fiancé (Suzy Delair) is introduced into the plot. She breaks up with her fiancé and flees, somehow winding up on L & H's atoll. Of course Stan and Ollie and the other two are complete gentlemen.

To further complicate things Uranium is discovered. Word gets out and since no nation has claimed sovereignty hordes of people descend upon the island chasing the boys all around. Then the atoll sinks. Go figure. Weird ending.

This was Laurel and Hardy's final film as a team. Laurel had been ill and looked it on screen. Hardy had gained weight and wasn't doing well either. This was Stan's last film. Hardy worked as a solo appearing in two films without his long time partner.
