Unicorn Store (2017)
8/10
Weird, funny, thoughtful, interpretable, and a feel-good movie
6 April 2019
Sometimes a movie that can be interpret in many different ways is exactly what you need on a Saturday evening.

This is a lovely little story, and it is often really funny.

Not sure exactly how I see this movie - is she a young girl throughout the movie? Is it about growing up? Is it a political statement about conformity? Is she living in a fantasy world because she cannot cope with reality?

As far as I see it this movie is about self development, and self realization. It is about being who you are, being proud over it, and although you have to grow up it does not mean you should completely let go of your dreams. Also we sometimes need to find our "Unicorn", be it real or a metaphor for what you seek because life sucks - life is not a happy peppy place of pink clouds wherein good always wins, and life do not clearly show us evil people easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats. That is what I took out of this movie, right or not, and I believe that is something really nice I will take away.

Acting very solid, as you can expect. Script very good. I think the humor is great, perhaps not enough of it though? Directing very good, but not completely spot on. Reading comments and reviews it is clear that not everyone understood the message of the movie, whatever it is, and since storytelling is the directors job it fails somewhat in that department, although I also think that is sort of the point. At times I also got the feeling that this is a movie made by acting students, but again I think that too was sort of the point.

I really enjoyed this. Could have been made funnier, a few directorial misses, and look a bit cheap at times. Still I give this a 8/10. A weak 8, almost a 7, but this is a feel good movie to watch on a rainy night.

I recommend!
