Dumb Witness does not sound like a very politically correct title until you find out that it relates to the dog.

Poirot and Captain Hastings are off to the Lake District. Charles Arundel, an old school friend of Battle Hastings aims to break the water speed record on Lake Windermere. His wealthy aunt Emily Arundel suspects that one of her members of the family is trying to killer for her money. She changes her will but she drops dead in a shroud of green mist.

A fox-terrier called Bob holds the clues to the first attempt made on Aunt Emily when she tripped down the stairs. Bob is trying to tell Poirot certain clues by replicating some of his actions and giving clues.

This is another slow moving story. It is a while before Aunt Emily dies. There are red herrings thrown here and there but it only serves to disguise a rather obvious culprit.

The denouement is a let down when the murderer simply confesses when the evidence against them was rather flimsy. It was like watching an episode of Colombo in that respect. Worse the murderer mentions something like 'I would had got away with it if was not for that meddling Poirot.' It all went Scooby Doo. Rather appropriate given the role Bob plays.
