Great Film
10 January 2019
In the film Hoops Africa: Ubuntu Matters, I appreciated how many different locations and groups of people were used and interviewed. The film opened by giving background on many of the organizations featured such as Hoops 4 Hope, the Boston Celtics, the NBA, and other affiliated groups. After introducing each of the organizations individually, throughout the film connections between them were made and a bigger picture was created. The film did a good job of focusing on the community outreach aspect of Hoops 4 Hope and the NBA programs rather than the technical aspect, although there still was still a clear technical aspect present based on the footage of the former and current NBA players coaching as well as the path through which the Celtics took to win the NBA championship, which made it easier for the viewers who were less knowledgeable about basketball concepts to understand the film. The concept of Ubuntu, which very few people had heard of, was very well contextualized both in Africa through Hoops 4 Hope as well as in the United States with the Celtics and viewers could see the impact that Ubuntu can have on people's live. Overall, the film was very engaging and enjoyable.
