The Teddy Bears' Christmas (1992 TV Movie)

Warning: Spoilers
"The Teddy Bears' Christmas" is a book-based half-hour television special for the holiday season and this one premiered back in 1992, so it is already over 25 years old. Director is Paul Schibli and he is as unknown pretty much like basically all the other people working on this one behind the camera as well as voice actors, so I will spare you the names. But the good is that this film is evidence of how you don't need really famous names to make a lasting impression as I quite enjoyed this little movie. I think it is at its very best early on at the house still when we get the introduction to the story, but when it moves outside to the department store and gets slightly worse, the second bear is introduced and lifts the quality again, so it is all good really. Enjoyable for sure. I thought the first bear looked a bit like Winnie Pooh and with that second bear the title was also explained to me as I kept wondering about the plural form. In any case, this little film here was released 3 years before the global blockbuster hit Toy Story and this is what I am referring to with the title of my review. Obviously it would be nonsense to say Toy Story stole the idea from this one, but I am still surprised to see a film that has a smimilar concept like toys that talk and move around when nobody is watching, even if it is only teddy bears in this movie. by the way I loved the recurring joke with the dog being after the bears, even if I found it a bit surprising how he ignores the first bear on one occasion when he is all about chewing on the letter to Santa. Oh well, you can't really expect reason from animated dogs I suppose. In any case, this was a little fun movie, definitely a good watch for the holidays and even without a logical explanation I liked the ending and I think they are getting away with it as some sort of Christmas miracle for sure. So in my opinion, you should check this one oput, preferrably before December is over. It is also closer to 4 out of 5 than to 2 out of 5, which means something for sure. Perhaps I will adjust my rating on rewatch at some point. Go see it.
