A Necessary and Unpleasant Record
29 August 2018
A medium-large dog is strapped down and has 1,400 cubic centimeters of blood drawn. The doctor then replaces this with the same amount of his "Solution Citrate." The dog is fine.

By this time Painlevé was probably known for his science movies, as well as being the son of a mathematician and a former Prime Minister, so he probably struck the scientists making this experiment -- looking for a blood substitute -- as someone to record the test. Nonetheless, it was very unpleasant to watch the dog being mistreated by men who all had exquisitely maintained beards, on which, I have no doubt, they lavished enormous care.

Of all the films by this film maker, this seems the least human to me.
