Back at the Barnyard (2007–2011)

Not great though still entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
There's not much to say about it other than it's very meh. The movie it was based on was meh and the same can be said about this show. Both weren't award worthy but they were entertaining nonetheless. Personally I like it because it's not the greatest cartoon but the animation is passable and some of the jokes do hit.

The show's basically about the misadventures of Otis and friends have on a daily basis. One thing that's strange is that Otis' a male yet has an udder. As for Abby (who's a new character voiced by Leigh-Allyn Baker) it's never explained why or how she came at all.

Only a handful of the cast from the film return. Probably the best example was Kevin James' absence. Otis' instead voiced by Chris Hardwick whom I think does a good job portraying the party animal. Wanda Sykes, Rob Paulson, Tino Insana, Jeff Garcia and a few others reprise their roles. The episodes don't break new ground but it's still funny to see the gags and the jokes they tell. There's a little bit of gross out humor which may be off putting to some.

The show only had 2 seasons and it's not hard to see why. The animation's not bad but it's not great. Some of the textures look off which makes some of the characters look hideous. I notice in the second season there're a few changes in the characters: There're more pop culture references in many of the episodes starting with the title, some of the characters such as Duke are less visible and their personality's reduced. Duke for example originally wanted to succeed Otis as the leader of the barn animals in the first season but this was completely removed, Bessie's shown more of an emotional side than the previous season and in some cases gets her share of punishment by the other characters. Unlike the first season where most of the setting took place on and around the barn, season 2 expands their adventures to the city and even the mountains they live near in one episode where they were visiting Bigfoot.

The characters are funny and likable though they're also stupid. Otis' the leader of the group and he's not good at his job. To be fair he does keep the animals from being seen by humans such as their paranoid nosy neighbor Mrs. Beady who's dedicated to exposing their existence but a lot of his antics and selfishness lead to several close calls. His best friend is a feisty mexican mouse named Pip who has a crush on Bessie who's feelings she doesn't reciprocate. His other friends are the nice but gluttonous and dimwitted Pig, the paranoid, unstable ferret who's a vegetarian named Freddie, a smart yet meek, unlucky rooster named Peck and the new cow Abby, a tomboy with a southern accent whom he has his crush on though neither's willing to admit their true feelings for each other. Secondary characters are the farmers dog named Duke who's obsessed with being the new leader of the barn, the Jersey Cows obsessed with pulling pranks on people and the Farmer himself named Buyer who's a feeble old man oblivious to what really goes on his farm.

As far as stories go, they're pretty good. Not great but they held my attention and I laughed a few times at the jokes they threw. I also noticed in the second season that there's a lot more cutaway gags. The chemistry between the characters are pretty good and lead to some funny jokes. A good example's when in one episode where Otis, Duke, and the gang rush to stop his sister's wedding due to her marrying his rival Baxter who's a conman. In one scene where they throw a party to lure Baxter into a trap by installing a couch in hopes of him chewing it up to ruin his reputation only for Duke to chew it up instead while Pip snaps photos of him. The next day when they're looking at the photos Pip tries to make light of it by saying "At least I got his good side". An annoyed Otis responds by sarcastically saying that he's not helping.

Overall it's not a bad show, it's just meh. There's a few jokes that're funny and it's not all bad. I will say this, the way they fought back against Nick and the Network was hilarious. If you want something stupid to watch or have little kids you'll get it here.
