Naachiyaar (2018):

As soon as we read the title card that says 'A Bala film', we expect a dark and disturbing film with a realistic approach to life.Be it his Pithamagan or Naan Kadavul and his last film Thaarai Thappattai,Bala's films are not for everyone. They are gut wrenching. But surprisingly Naachiyaar is his simplest drama till date..

Plot:

Two teenagers Kaathu (GV Prakash), a fruit vendor and Arasi (Ivana), a house maid meet and start liking each other. The film opens with a pregnant Arasi being nabbed by ACP Naachiyaar (Jyothika) and another team led by Feroz (Rockline Venkatesh) arresting Kaathu who is accused of raping a minor.

My Review:

The film caught everyone's attention when the teaser saw actor Jyothika swearing as part of her tough-as-nails cop avatar. For all the excitement this avatar generated though, Jyothika's Naachiyaar is something of a storm in a teacup, simply having a woman walk, talk and act like the male heroes we're so used to.

But the film is a love story of teenagers but landed in bigger trouble...Bala doesn't waste any time, as the theme of the film is established in the first couple of scenes itself. The characters are introduced, and their purposes are conveyed immediately. The film starts off on a comical note, with quite a few comedy scenes that don't drift away from the main plot. From there, the story flows into the romantic portions involving GV and Ivana. All these scenes are convincing enough but nothing special..Even second half which actually needed to be a nail biting investigation turns out dull...And, unlike in his previous films, there is no strong antagonist for her to square off against, which robs the character of strength and the film of drama..

So,Naachiyaar is not only the simplest but also the weekest in Bala's career..

My Rating 6.25/10
