Murdoch Mysteries: Up from Ashes (2017)
Season 11, Episode 1
8/10
Starts Off Rough but Back to Business
26 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A direct continuation from season-ending episode 10.18 (Hell to Pay), this episode picks up with all of our major characters in peril (most of them of the mortal variety) and slowly untells what we thought we knew, layer by layer, until the badguys are in custody and we have a path forward for season 11.

The start of this episode is only borderline bearable as the the already-known villain(s) are so unreasonably powerful and cruel, easily compelling supposedly "good" public figures to commit heinous acts. It's difficult to follow the motivaiton for those under them to so blindly follow such sloppy and uncharismatic leaders who keep their own hands clean while others commit gallow-worthy crimes for them.

Once we get past the bad-guy narrative, the story moves on to one half of why we watch Murdoch Mysteries, the teamwork and interactions of the core cast of characters (we get a wee bit of the second half, the ahead-of-their-time investigative skills, but not nearly what we had back in season 1). Character interaction here is lovely and fun and advances the relationships. We are reassured that even with the losses suffered, a new season of Murdoch Mysteries is ready to unfurl (hopefully we will get more of the strong female Londoner introduced in this episode), All in all, there is reason to look forward to the 11th year of this series.
