There are two plot elements here. One is the arrival of Louisa's absentee mother who shows up at time time for some reason. Granted, she was informed of the upcoming birth, but she should have shown up month's before. The result of her arrival leads to some serious consequences. She is an utterly unlikable character. The other plot element involves Bert Large who is coming into conflict with a neighbor and his bar. The Large Cafe is in financial trouble because Bert is not a competent proprietor and he has a tenuous financial foundation. There is a little race called a "fun run" and Bert had hoped to profit from the people's need for food. His 'adversary" has put up a tent and is selling seafood and liquor and undercutting Bert (he is himself in financial difficulties and is using some illegal products). How Doc gets into it is that the owner of the other restaurant is having a series of ailments, including incredible back pain. Of course, Martin's bumbling around with the baby is another ongoing thing. I am new to this series. I'm hoping that the baby doesn't dominate everything from now on. It wears a bit thin for me at times.
